Waste Mangement is the largest environmental service provider, recycler and integrated industrial environmental service provider in North America. Our renewable energy projects create enough energy to power more than 1.3 million homes. The recovery of landfill gas, coupled with the power generated from the conversion of solid waste at our waste-to-energy plants, saves the equivalent of more than 13 million barrels of oil. In 2009, WM managed more than 8.5 million tons of material that was recycled or reused. WM landfills provide over 24,000 acres of protected habitat for wildlife and 73 landfills and facilities are certified by the Wildlife Habitat Council.
